The Judge is a Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-Nominated film that provides rare insight into Shari’a law, an often-misunderstood legal framework for Muslims, told through the eyes of the first woman judge to be appointed to the Middle East’s religious courts. Judge Kholoud’s story reflects a collective struggle for women’s control over their bodies, economic welfare, custodial rights, and marital status and leaves viewers with a greater understanding of Shari’a and strong imagery of powerful Muslim women, while illuminating some of the universal conflicts in the domestic life of the Arab world.
The Judge had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, US premiere at DOC NYC, European premiere at IDFA and was broadcast on PBS’ Independent Lens series in 2018. The Judge is available for DVD purchase and to stream online. For viewing options or to host your own screening, visit the film’s website for more information.
